The department has consistently supported community-based TB prevention and reduction programs and initiatives over the years, including the provision of critical TB services like screening, diagnostic supplies, treatment, and nutritional assistance for TB patients.
This year following a positive TB diagnosis of a student from ITI Selaqui it led to a series of contact tracing of close contacts which resulted in identifying 3 positive cases. This further prompted TPHC Dekyiling to conduct mass screening of entire staff and students. The screening was led by the TPHC’s executive secretary along with the medical team comprising of its doctor, nurses and its lab tech in coordination with the school’s Director. The mass screening was conducted between 12-14th August 2025, which began with awareness session highlighting key topics such as TB transmission, early diagnosis, prevention, treatment and stigma by The executive secretary and doctor. Under the screening, medical tests performed were Chest X-Ray, CT-TB and Gene Xpert test. A total of 94 individuals were screened which led to identification of 4 additional cases including one extra pulmonary TB, along with 36 diagnosed with Cy-TB who will not be treated but will be monitored closely by the school nurse. Among those identified with TB some were admitted at the Dekyiling health centers’ TB unit while some are under treatment at their school and private hospital. This prompt initiative by the health center funded under TESC program through the Tibet fund was able to avert a major outbreak at this school.
In order to combat the incidence of tuberculosis in our society, continuous efforts of medical professionals, community members, and governmental and non-governmental groups have been crucial. As we strive toward the government of India’s goal of ending TB, these initiatives are essential.
