Mr. Lobsang Dhargyal Born in 1932 in Shang Namling, Shigatse Dzong, he received his early education in traditional Tibetan schools at Zimshak and Lhasa Nyarong Shar School, where he studied Tibetan language and literature, including the basic subjects of traditional Tibetan learning.
At the age of twenty, he entered government service. In 1953, he served as the Settlement Officer of Shang Gyatso; in 1954, he was appointed Dzongpon of Lhuntse Dzong; and in 1956, he served as Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Pastoralism Section of the South-Central Office. In 1958, he subsequently undertook duties at the Criminal Investigation Office.
In 1959, he was arrested by the Chinese Communist authorities and imprisoned for fifteen years in places including Jiuquan in Gansu Province and Drabzhi Prison in Lhasa. Following his release from prison in 1974, he was placed in a work unit known as the “Labourers’ Group.” In 1978, he became a teacher at the Chinese Northwest University for Nationalities. In 1982, he was transferred to work as a teacher at Tibet University.
In 1985, he travelled to India to visit relatives and subsequently re-entered government service. He initially served in the Kashag Secretariat. In 1986, he was appointed Assistant to the Kalön for Information and International Relations, and in 1989, he was appointed as a Kalön of Health from 1st November 1988 to 11th May 1990.
In 1990, he served concurrently as the Director of the Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrology Institute) and the Director of the Reception Centre. On 3 July 1995, he was appointed Director of the Education and Cultural Publication Department. In addition to this responsibility, he also served as Chairperson of the Dorje Shugden Research Committee.
On 29 January 1997, he took the oath of office as a Justice of the Supreme Justice Commission. He retired from government service on 17 February 1999 after attaining the mandatory retirement age.
