WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY

World Hypertension day is observed annually on 17th May to highlight the growing burden of Hypertension across the Tibetan community in exile. The respective Tibetan settlement’s health workforce team ensure that the community understands the non communicable disease through varied initiatives. This year the day was marked with awareness and screening initiatives for Blood pressure, Weight and BMI. Settlement health workforce including nurses and doctors took their initiatives to monasteries, shops, OPH, community halls and events such as 28th Shoton festival to reach maximum audience on the day. At scattered Tibetan settlements the day was observed beyond 17th May. While some settlements collaborated with local TMAI doctors to mark the day, some collaborated with local Indian hospitals to host medical camps.

Settlement population participated in initiatives ranging from Screening, Games, Gorshey, to informative Teach outs addressing myths & questions following presentations, pamphlet distribution and counseling. Some key take home messages for the day included adherence to healthy lifestyle, regular screening and follow up. A total of 1249 (North 604,South & Central 401,North.E 244) individuals benefitted from the event. Individuals with elevated Blood pressure and BMI on higher side were counselled, advised for Follow up test.

Remember no symptoms does not mean blood pressure is normal ! Get screened regularly.
